The Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino

The 3rd (but stand alone) in Higashino's  Detective Galileo series, The Devotion of Suspect X is as subtle as a Judo match of crime, passion and intrigue.  You will not have to have read the prior books in this series, BUT...if you do not you will be missing out.

Having just been introduce to Japanese mystery, my mind was blown by the ability to include so much story in to such a small space. I could not have picked a better intro! Set in the early 2000's, Suspect X is the story of a single mother extorted by her husband, murders him, and the subsequent investigation. (No spoilers)

Most captivating you me is the thrusting of the criminals into the forefront of the story. Where many mysteries feature criminals or cops, only using the other side as juxtaposition, Higashino uses a triangular approach to his story for balance. Despite the extra character, this remains tightly drawn and quick moving.

Give The Devotion of Suspect X a try for a welcomed departure from the hum drum of James Pattersonesque procedurals. If you are not complete turned on your head by the sharp writing, intricately woven plot and dynamo ending, you can head back to the Stuart Woods with a clear conscience.  You won't read them the same again though.
