Country Dark by Chris Offutt- What a tremendously simple story, done so well! Only a few characters, smooth plot, and straightforwardly written. I could read this one again. Tucker, a Korean War vet, returns home to Kentucky and is faced with challenges. He makes a living as best he can, and is faced with a few big choices. That's it. Simple and to the point. I am a new big fan of Chris Offutt and this book.
Nine Nasty Words: English In The Gutter: Then, Now And Forever by John McWhorter- If you do nothing with your life for the rest of it, listen to the audiobook of this one. It will be fun to blast, with the exception of a couple of chapters around the "N" which I wouldn't recommend. I enjoyed the study of words, their origins and free pass to hear dirty mouth words thrown around willy-nilly in the name of knowledge.
