Pararescue: The Skill And Courage Of The Elite 106th Rescue Wing by Michael Hirsh

There is no way to review such a book without first recognizing the men that took part in this mission as real heroes. That word gets thrown around a lot, but the risks they took to save even a single person would leave most people at home. Combat histories get hype, but these servicemen are due more than they receive. My hat is off to the pilots, PJs, and Coast Guard involved in this rescue.

Now to the book!

From start to finish I could not put it down. Hirsh served as an Army reporter in Vietnam and that experience is evident in his ability to compact action into tight spaces. The reader is taken blow, by blow through the actions, and reactions of the men of the 106th. I came away with an altogether better understanding of rescue operations on the open seas.

I cannot say enough about how exciting this book is! The story is one of super human strength, mind boggling concentration and courage under immense pressure. The attention to detail puts the reader in the action and right there in the spray!
