Why I Love: Tom Robbins

I have stumbled over a few writers in my reading life that actually make me turn the page. Tom Robbins is one of them. If he was a Librarian, I know for a fact he would be a DeGen Librarian

What I like most about Robbins is his ability to bury an Easter Egg in the middle of the page. Usually I fly through his books looking for these. Just when you think thinks have gotten a little bland, out of no where, with a quick fly of the wrist, Robbins will yank you back in with an analogy or witticism that reminds you why you are reading him in the first place.

The other great thing about Robbins is the stories he is able to weave from seemingly out of nowhere. And keep them going. Who else can pull a full length novel out of a tin can, conch shell, and broom? I don't see other folks even trying! Need a off the wall take on an all women dude ranch? Robbins has you covered. My personal favorite is he full essay on the love apple sandwich. Not only is this my go to summer meal, but a stable in Robbins' diet as well.

Finally, Robbins is a great pallet cleanser. If you've been reading too much of the same stuff, try a Tom Robbins original. It's not going to take you very long and is just quarky enough to get the cobwebs out of the attic. He will wake up your eyes, refresh the perspective and leave you just slightly off center, which is just want we all need every once in awhile.

It's hard to back Robbins into a corner, and you cannot easily assign him to a school. He's smart, witty, artistic, and from left field. That's what I like most about him. Stories from a different point of view, with unique perspective and those great little barbs and hooks buried on the page will make you fall in love with Tom Robbins. And if you don't, come kick me in the seat of the pants.
